This is a 3 fly "drop shot" rig used for high sticking / tight line / Euro nymphing. This system uses a series of small tippet rings and tapering line thicknesses to reduce re-rigging. I use tippet rings in place of surgeons knots for the dropper flies because if one of them breaks off it is much easier to re-rig since it will typically break at the tippet ring.
Look closely and you will notice that the weakest points in this rig are near the flies, and get stronger as you move up through the system. I also use improved clinch knots in the "trunk" of the system, and basic clinch knots on the "droppers".
This takes a bit of time to rig up, but one you do subsequent break-offs and re-rigs are very quick - thus maximizing your rig's time in the water!
• You can also tie a 2 fly variation (https://leaders.barbless.co/leader/92-tight-line-drop-shot-rig-2-flies).
• Pinch on additional split shot above the 3x Surgeon's knot to adjust sink rate based on flows.
• Are drop shots legal in California? According to the 2018 regulations, as long as your drop shot weight is 1/2 ounce or less, yes. Here's what the reg book says: "Section 2.10. Hook And Weight Restrictions > Item 2, "It is unlawful to use any hook which is directly or indirectly attached closer than 18 inches to any weight exceeding 1/2 ounce."
• As long as your weight system is a 1/2 ounce or less you are good to go.
